It’s almost the end of the month, and you know what that means: new stuff is coming to a streaming service near you. Here is everything arriving to Netflix in August to keep you busy on one of those rainy late-summer nights.
Just a few weeks after Transformers: The Last Knight rolled into theaters, Paramount is getting that Bumblebee prequel on the fast track. Today we got the news of a rumored mysterious working title, an official title (complete with colon, like all of today’s young adult franchises), and an extremely soon production start date. Like, very soon. Like, within a couple of weeks from now.
Marvel loves to sneak Easter eggs of all sizes into their films for comic fans to parse through — it cam be something as big as Nick Fury’s post-credits appearance in the first Iron Man or something as small as a billboard in Thor advertising a “journey into mystery.” Spider-Man: Homecoming snuck a few references of its own in, one of which has caused some major speculation among fans about certain ancient religions.
Paramount’s Transformers spinoff Bumblebee is on the fast track, and quickly gathering cast members. After Hailee Steinfeld, another rising star has just joined the Transformers family: Jorge Lendeborg Jr. has been cast as the male counterpart to Steinfeld’s heroine in the movie.
One of the most delightful parts of Spider-Man: Homecoming is how cleverly the Avengers are integrated into the world. Gone are the vague statements like “the disaster in New York” — now we have school PSAs recorded by the most sensible Avenger, Captain America himself. We see a few of those PSAs in the movie, but apparently Chris Evans recorded a bunch of them in character, and they’ll all be on the home video release.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 home video release is imminent, and, naturally, because this is a James Gunn movie and a Marvel movie, there will be a bunch of fun bonus features to entice you to purchase it. One of these, Gunn himself announced today, is a music video for “Guardians Inferno,” the disco-inspired track that plays over the movie’s end credits and features a performance by none other than David Hasselhoff.
Earlier this week, rumors swirled that Samuel L. Jackson would reprise his role as Nick Fury for Captain Marvel. The former director of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been living in hiding ever since his last appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but he’s set to make a comeback in both installments of Infinity War. And today, we’ve learned that he’ll also show up to recruit Captain Marvel into the fold.
Kids these days, always plugged in to their smartphones and laptops and Instagrams, constantly suffering from the compulsion to record every aspect of their lives. For a superhero, this is probably a bad idea, given the whole secret identity thing and all — but our new Peter Parker is very much a millennial, and he’s going to vlog this whole thing if it kills him.
“My Spider Sense is tingling” is the most classic of Spider-Man catchphrases — but you won’t hear it in the new Spider-Man: Homecoming. The newest version of our friendly neighborhood web-slinger is different than his filmic predecessors in many ways, a big one being his lack of the traditional Spidey Sense, which alerts him to the presence of dangers he can’t immediately see. Homecoming director Jon Watts explained that the decision to leave his sixth sense out of the movie was very much on purpose.
