Another business in downtown Battle Creek has benefitted from the small business startup loan program put forth by the W.K. Kellogg foundation.   “Kitchen Proper” opened for business Wednesday night at 34 West Michigan.  Check out menus and photos below.

Owners Sarah Barany and Tony Davis are serving up quality lunches and dinners in the space recently occupied by “Malia Mediterranean Bistro.”  Both worked at Malia; Barany as a server for almost six years, and Davis as a chef for a year and a half.   Previously, both worked at Gull Lake Country Club, where they met.

Barany says they still have work to do on the place, but once they were able to get the credit card machine set up, they figured they’d open right away.  She said Davis and his staff were anxious to start cooking.

For lunch, I had a delicious squash bisque, not too sweet and nice and buttery.  The beet salad was huge, fresh, unique, and really great.

While I was down there, I saw a wide cross-section of diners, including some businessmen visiting from abroad, noted local artist Andrew Freemire, and Battle Creek Community Foundation CEO Brenda Hunt, to name a few.

Hunt says the small business loan program made it possible for the new owners to realize their dream.  She noted that the Burmese restaurant on East Michigan Avenue also benefitted from the new program.

Barany says they’re excited to hear news of a new office opening across the street that will bring as many as 65 potential daily customers to the restaurant.
