A man is in critical condition after he was struck by a semi-truck while walking along the road in Battle Creek.

The Battle Creek Police Department says that they were called to Columbia Ave. near Helmer Rd. around 6:30pm Tuesday, after a man was seen walking away from his car after it had gone off the road. Witnesses said the man had been walking on Helmer Rd, causing cars to swerve around him; shortly after, the man was found, struck by a semi-truck.

The truck’s driver said that as he approached the man, he was standing on the curb, but as soon as the truck got close the man walked into the path of it. The man had to be taken to Bronson Kalamazoo with critical injuries, while the truck’s driver wasn’t hurt.

This incident remains under investigation; it's not known why the man was walking in the road, or why his vehicle left the road in the first place.
