A busy intersection in Kalamazoo will finally become safer.

The intersection of Gull, Ransom and Harrison streets in Kalamazoo will turn into a roundabout.  According to mlive,

At its Monday meeting, the City Commission unanimously approved a $1.9 million contract to create a roundabout.  The high-traffic intersection, located in a developing area near downtown, presents a danger to pedestrians and bicyclists seeking to access Kalamazoo River Valley Trail and local businesses.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, about 17,000 cars pass through the intersection everyday and a roundabout will be beneficial for drivers:

Roundabouts offer a solution to the traditional intersection problems of delays, capacity and safety. Since everyone is traveling in the same direction and at lower speed, crashes are reduced.

Construction of the roundabout will begin next month but no word on when it will be finished.
