Grand Rapids Woman Starts Facebook Support Group for “Karens”
Karen. It's a term that has been thrown around usually aimed towards a woman who is being problematic. Urban Dictionary, defines a "Karen" as a woman who is typically blonde and "makes solutions to others' problems an inconvenience to her although she isn't even remotely affected." Even Dictionary.com has their own definition which reads, "Karen is a pejorative slang term for an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman who uses her privilege to get her way or police other people's behaviors."
I wouldn't paint this as a group that supports badly behaved Karens. Rather, it sounds like a place for Karens who are making a difference in their community to be celebrated. A place for the good Karens if you will which also takes on a theme of women empowerment. Something I can always get behind.
Now, the Facebook group is private so, I'm making assumptions about the premise of the group. But, the public "about" section says, in part,
Are you THAT one? The one who is an advocate, a friend, a confidante, the one who speaks up, builds up, supports, and protects all human beings? Yes, you may even asks for the manager because you realize that its important to share positives when something needs to be praised, appreciated, or constructively addressed? In this group we are NOT the "Karen's" of the world that seek to lie, cause divisiveness, or perpetrate hate against our fellow human beings due to any differences we may have.
If your name is Karen, no matter which way it may be spelled, and you want to request to join the group you can do so here.
