Historic New Brewery Coming to Grand Rapids
News of a new brewery in southwest Michigan is hardly surprising. After moving here I learned very quickly that Michiganders love their beers. In fact, there are nearly 400 breweries across the state. But, the latest brewery opening in Grand Rapids is making history.
Black Calder Brewing Company, owned and operated by Terry Rostic and Jamaal Ewing, is Michigan's first fully Black-owned brewery. For now, they're working with local breweries to sell their product until they open their own location in 2021. While their product may be new to us, Rostic and Ewing are hardly amateurs. They've been working in the brewing field for years, developing their skills along the way.
In an interview with Detroit Free Press, Rostic said,
We appreciate the significance of being recognized as Michigan’s first Black-owned brewery. It’s something Michigan and the craft beer industry has been longing for, but it’s not the only thing we want to be known for. Our motto is simple: Make dope beer for dope people.
With their launch, Black Calder Brewing Company is releasing their Black IPA in the Grand Rapids area on Black Friday. How fitting. You'll be able to find it at Vivant, a Grand Rapids based brewery that their currently working with.
The community seems ready to welcome them with open arms. On their Facebook post announcing their official name, Black Calder Brewing Company, the positive comments were pouring in. Like:
Beth L wrote: I'm dope! OK, I'm not so dope...but I like dope beers! Can't wait, good luck guys!
Dominique A commented: I don’t even drink beer but the slogan dope beer for dope people...I may have to try
Heather K said: Excited for you guys!! Congratulations!!
With the rest of the 60+ comments saying more of the same. They are excited!
To me, it's clear that there are several areas of our society that are lacking in diversity. But, to be honest, the brewing world is one I never thought of. With their experience and passion I have no doubt that their brews will be added to a list of Michigan's favorites in no time. If you'd like more information on their beers, opening dates and more check out their Facebook page.
