Michigan is known for the Great Lakes, its cherries, and apples, making automobiles, and Faygo. Happy Birthday Faygo who has been making pop in Detroit for 115 years.

Michigan and Faygo

Like the Faygo song says, "remember when you were a kid." If you're a Michigander then odds are you have a Faygo memory while growing up in the Mitten state.

My childhood memory of Faygo is when on a hot summer day my mom would treat my sister and me to a pop and say, "you can only choose one", my go-to flavor was Redpop. I remember taking my time while drinking a Redpop and trying to make that bottle last all day.

I don't remember a church function or any event I went to as a kid that didn't have a cooler of Faygo within arm's reach.

Two Russian immigrants Ban and Perry Feigenson who were bakers formed the Feigenson brother bottling Works on November 4, 1907. It wasn't until 14 years later the two brothers changed the name of the company to Faygo.

When Faygo launched, there was no such thing as a plastic bottle, they were all made of glass. When you would open a bottle of your favorite Faygo flavor for the very first time it would make a pop sound hence the name "pop."

When Ben and Perry Feigenson first got started in 1907 they were bottling lager beer, mineral water, and soda water. They got an idea while packaging up some soda water to make soft drinks based on their frosting flavors since the two were bakers in the beginning.

When breweries like Strohs, Pabst, Miller, Schlitz, and others were coming on strong in the Midwest, Faygo made another run at making beer in 1934 that was short-lived.

It wasn't until the late 1960s that Faygo went nationwide. The soda giant has since grown to 50 flavors and still growing to this day.

It is amazing what the two Feigenson brothers built back in 1907 and is still living strong 115 years later.

Happy Birthday, Faygo!
