Michigan residents who are eligible for SNAP benefits are also going to be getting additional discounts at Meijer stores throughout the state.

Meijer announced that Michigan customers who are able to use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be able to get discounts ranging from $5 to $10 or five percent to 10 percent on qualifying purchases of fruits and vegetables.

Special Grant from the Ag Department

Rick Keyes is the President and CEO of Meijer. He says the stores will be able to offer the discounts because of a special grant from the US Department of Agriculture that Meijer applied for earlier this year.

"As a company committed to enriching lives in the communities we serve, feeding people has always been at the heart of what we do," Keyes said. "We are participating in this important federal initiative to help families get easier access to healthy foods, which is another way we can help reduce food insecurity."

The program is already underway, and customers can take advantage of the first discount period which runs through October 31. Customers can receive 10 percent off fresh fruits and vegetables and SNAP customers will also receive coupons to take similar discounts off future purchases of qualifying produce.

Increase In SNAP Benefits This Month

Last week, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that all Michigan families who receive SNAP benefits will continue receiving extra benefits in the month of October.

Eligible families will receive at least $95 extra in benefits to help offset the price of groceries as prices continue to increase.

The extra assistance will help about 1.3 million people who use the SNAP program in Michigan.
