First of all, the Falls River is a pretty extraordinary site to visit: beautiful, secluded, woodsy...with nothing but the white noise of the falls surrounding the area.

Within the Falls River, about 2 1/2 miles south of L'Anse, is the abandoned powerhouse and Powerhouse Falls. These particular falls flow over layered slate, with the old abandoned cement powerhouse sitting next to it.

The Powerhouse Falls have a taller drop than most falls on this river; if you hike a little upstream from the abandoned powerhouse, you'll come across the remains of an old dam that was demolished.

Can you legally visit? It seems so. The area has a place to park and is a little park area where you can picnic and explore. Most websites I've come across seem to encourage visitors and tourists, so there ya go.

HOW TO GET THERE: Take US-41 from Marquette all the way to L'Anse. Before getting into town, turn left on Dam Rd. That will take you straight to the river and to Powerhouse Road. Turn right on Powerhouse Road. and you're there.
