I’m probably not going to rock your world if I tell you that Hollywood enjoys catering to the nostalgia of audiences. Some of the most successful shows and movies from the last few years - including Stranger Things and Ghostbusters - have succeeded specifically because they were able to recreate things that we loved when we were children. What made Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One such a worldwide phenomenon wasn’t just the author’s grasp of eighties and nineties popular culture, but the way he wove that into the book’s original narrative. His character’s obsession with the past was both their greatest strength and their biggest weakness.

So who better to find an original cinematic story in the intersection of past and future than Steven Spielberg? The first trailer for Ready Player One is an absolutely ridiculous mashup of past and present icons, from the main character in The Iron Giant to Doc Brown’s DeLorean from Back to the Future to Freddy Krueger. While the trailer doesn’t really give us any semblance of the overall story from the novel, that’ll come later. This trailer is all about the spectacle of the Oasis and the nostalgia lovingly recreated in the film. I can’t wait to see what Spielberg and company have in store for us beyond just the CGI bombast.

While no official plot synopsis exists for the film, here’s the full plot synopsis of the book, courtesy of the Penguin website:

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.

But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.

Ready Player One will star Tye Sheridan, Mark RylanceBen Mendelsohn, Simon PeggOlivia Cooke, and Hannah John-Kamen. It will hit theaters March 30, 2018.
